Baddest cat in Ohio

July 25, 2004

Like the song lyrics say, the cat came back.

I have previously posted fotos of my sister's cat, Shadow. A couple days ago, I was considering a final post in tribute to her.

I guess this post is more of a celebration in her honor because she disappeared for 7 whole days and miraculously returned! For some cats this may not be a problem. But, she is 12+ years old and ailing. As I mentioned before, my sister has been giving her fluids with a needle everyday. She just got a checkup at the vet a couple weeks ago and he says thanks to good care, she should live many more months.

Well, since she started life as a stray, she enjoys the outdoors. Plus, she prefers going outside to using her litterbox. She went out the door one evening last week and never came home.

My sister was concerned and eventually we expected the worst. Since she has kidney disease, perhaps instinct forced her away to die alone. There were many questions and confusion because she does not really act sick, and she had never left for an extended period before.

Much rejoicing occured when she was meowing on the front step after one week of absence! She lost some weight, presumably due to dehydration, but otherwise no worse for the wear.

Of course, she won't live forever (unfortunately, none of us do!), but euthanizing her will be easier than not knowing what happened during her final days.

We had a housecat once that was our second-least favorite of all time. The cat hated people, or at least us.... We lived out in an old farm house on a dirt road, and one day the cat got out and didn't come home. She had never stayed away; food and water and a warm place to sleep were INSIDE, no matter how curious she was. It completely saddened me and I searched the roadsides, expecting the worst. One day about a week later, I heard her calling from the field and finally spotted her eyes and the top of her head peering at me from the tall grass. Hunger had won her over. When we moved and couldn't take her, the vet's office kept her and she became an office cat. Cool ending! Thu 12-Aug-2004 04:00
